The Update – February 2023
Five events in six days
The start of February was a busy time for the crew at RAC Arena as we hosted five events in six days. Former Savage Garden singer, Darren Hayes, kicked things off on the last day of January, followed by Dave Chappelle, Bat Out of Hell and the final two home game for the Perth Wildcats. The impressive effort from the team was captured in a timelapse by SoCo Studios. You can check it out on YouTube.
UFC takes over Perth
On Sunday Feb 12, UFC 284 took place in front of a sold-out crowd, with Perth on display to the millions of viewers who tuned in to the worldwide broadcast. The event broke our record for the highest number of ticket sales for a single sporting event after 14,124 fans walked through the doors. It also broke the Australian record for gross ticketing revenue for a single event at $5,911,598.
The day itself was full of energy and excitement as some of the biggest names in and out of the sport flocked to see Australia’s own Alexander Volkanovski take on Islam Makhachev in the Lightweight Title Bout. Although the Australian fans didn’t get the win they were after, it’s safe to say the day was an immense success for UFC fans, for Western Australia, and for the team at RAC Arena.
Blast from the Past
We dusted off our chain wallets and pulled on our flared jeans in February, throwing it back with some iconic acts from the 90’s. Dave Chappelle brought the laughs on Feb 2, then we grooved along to the hits of then and now from the Backstreet Boys on Feb 25 and Snoop Dogg on Feb 27. Thankfully fans were not dissuaded after both Backstreet Boys and Snoop Dogg were rescheduled three times with the three shows drawing in over 39,000 attendees collectively.
Wildcats wind up their NBL season
The NBL season wrapped up with the Perth Wildcats returning to finals action after missing out last season. The team unfortunately didn’t make it through to the Semi-finals after going down against the Cairns Taipans whilst playing away but the Cats will now enjoy some well-earned rest from The Jungle. Fear not, Perth sports fans can still get their cheer on when our resident netball team, West Coast Fever, kick off their 2023 season in a Grand Final repeat against the Melbourne Vixens on March 18. Tickets to all of the Fever’s upcoming games can be purchased here.
